The 2U Server Most Buyers Get Wrong

When most buyers compare 2U rack servers, they stare at CPU generations and clock speeds. The 385 W TDP ceiling of the 4th and 5th Gen Intel Xeon Scalable is the same everywhere – the real differences between platforms hide in three places: thermal headroom, memory fault tolerance, and operations automation. That is exactly where the FusionServer 2288H V7 separates itself.

The 2288H V7 is a new-generation 2U 2-socket rack server engineered for SDS, VDI, CDN, virtualization, big data, database, cloud scenarios, accelerated inference, SME workloads, OA and web applications. It delivers enterprise-grade reliability with a lower power bill and dramatically simpler day-2 operations.

Configuration Matrix

The 2288H V7 ships in four drive-bay configurations, so you match density to workload instead of over-buying chassis:

Configuration Drive bays Best for
2288H V7 (8 drives) 8 x 2.5″ SAS/SATA Light virtualization, branch workloads
2288H V7 (12 drives) 12 x 2.5″ or 3.5″ mix General enterprise consolidation
2288H V7 (24 drives) 24 x 2.5″ SAS/SATA VDI, dense virtualization
2288H V7 (25 drives) 25 x 2.5″ with NVMe options High-speed flash, database caching

Across the family you can scale to 45 x 2.5-inch drives or 28 x NVMe U.2 SSDs for high-speed flash, or run 12-18 x 3.5-inch drives where capacity per bay matters more.

Processor & Memory

Compute. One or two 4th or 5th Gen Intel Xeon Scalable processors with TDP up to 385 W per socket, on the Emmitsburg PCH. That is 50% better overall performance over the previous generation for the same power envelope.

Memory. 32 x DDR5 DIMM slots at 5600 MT/s, plus 16 additional DDR5 DIMMs supported through CXL technology – up to 48 DIMMs in total with the CXL option. The unique AI memory fault self-healing algorithm predicts and contains memory errors before they crash the workload, reducing system downtime by 66%.

Storage & RAID

Hot-swappable drive configurations cover 8 to 35 x 2.5-inch SAS/SATA drives/SSDs (up to 45 x 2.5-inch or 28 x NVMe SSDs), 12 to 18 x 3.5-inch SAS/SATA drives, and dedicated 4/8/16/24 x NVMe SSD layouts. Flash storage boot is handled by dual M.2 SSDs with hardware RAID and hot swap.

The RAID controller supports RAID 0, 1, 10, 1E, 5, 50, 6 and 60 with supercapacitor-backed cache protection against power failure, plus RAID level migration, drive roaming, self-diagnosis and remote web-based configuration – so a drive failure or a rebalance never requires a service visit.

Network & PCIe Expansion

Two FlexIO card slots are dedicated to OCP 3.0 NICs, supporting hot swap and PCIe 5.0 – 100% higher interconnect bandwidth than PCIe 4.0 for high-speed networking. In total the 2288H V7 offers up to 19 x PCIe slots (2 x FlexIO + 17 x standard), 8 of which support PCIe 5.0. For accelerated workloads, it accepts 4 x dual-width or 14 x single-width GPU cards, covering inference and rendering without a separate appliance.

Power, Cooling & Physical

  • PSU: 900 W / 1200 W / 1500 W / 2000 W / 3000 W Platinum/Titanium hot-swappable power supplies in 1+1 redundancy, with industry-leading conversion efficiency (12.5% lower power loss than industry average).
  • Cooling: 4 x hot-swappable counter-rotating fans in N+1 redundancy with Advanced Extended Volume Air Cooling (EVAC) – 50% better heat dissipation than a single heat sink, plus algorithm-optimized fan/CPU power saving up to 8%.
  • Dimensions: 86.1 mm x 447 mm x 798 mm (3.39 x 17.60 x 31.42 in), same chassis for 2.5-inch and 3.5-inch drive versions. Weight varies by configuration (drives, PSUs, risers) – request the exact figure with your build.
  • Temperature: 5°C to 50°C (41°F to 122°F), compliant with ASHRAE Classes A1/A2/A3/A4 – it runs where air-cooled racks run hot.

Security & Management

Security. Power-on password, administrator password, Trusted Platform Module (TPM) 2.0, security bezel, secure boot and chassis intrusion detection. The Root of Trust (RoT)-based secure boot validates firmware at every layer, so the server cannot boot tampered code.

Management. The integrated iBMC chip carries a dedicated management GE port and supports Redfish, SNMP and IPMI 2.0, with an HTML5/VNC KVM remote console, virtual media, Agentless monitoring, telemetry, fault diagnosis and full out-of-band control. Optional FusionDirector adds fleet-wide automation: automatic version push (20x faster upgrades), 75% tool-assisted deployment steps (10x faster rollout) and 100% accurate asset stocktaking.
