Migration Checklist: 10TB to 20TB

  1. Verify RAID controller firmware supports 20TB+ drives. PERC H730/H740/H750/H755/H965i all support 20TB with firmware from 2022 onward. LSI 93xx/94xx/96xx require v16.00.00.00 or later.
  2. Plan for rebuild time. A 20TB RAID 6 rebuild takes 28-32 hours at 200 Mb/s. Schedule during a maintenance window.
  3. Replace one drive at a time or build a new array. For production, build a new RAID 10 array with 20TB drives and migrate VMs via storage migration.
  4. Expand the filesystem after adding capacity. Installing drives does not automatically expand the datastore or volume.
  5. Keep 2 cold-spare 20TB drives on hand. A failure during a 30-hour rebuild is low-probability but high-consequence.
