Six RAID Controller Mistakes That Cost More Than the Controller Itself
Mistake #1: Ordering the wrong RAID level for your SSD type. NVMe SSDs on RAID 5 with a Gen3 controller bottleneck at the controller, not the drive. The PERC H965i solves this with 16 ports of PCIe 5.0 x8 upstream bandwidth — enough to feed 16 Gen5 NVMe SSDs without the controller becoming the bottleneck.
Mistake #2: Buying a SAS-only controller for an NVMe future. Every server you buy in 2026 has NVMe bays. The H965i is a tri-mode controller — SAS, SATA, and NVMe on the same ports, same cables, same management interface. You do not need separate HBAs for each protocol.
Mistake #3: Underestimating cache size for parity RAID. RAID 5 and RAID 6 write performance depends heavily on controller cache. The H965i includes 8 GB of NV cache (non-volatile, capacitor-backed) — not the 2-4 GB DRAM cache that budget controllers ship. For 8+ drive RAID 6 matrici, the difference is 40-60% more write IOPS.
Mistake #4: Ignoring rebuild time when choosing RAID 5 vs RAID 6. A 24TB HDD rebuild on RAID 5 takes 30+ ore. During that entire window, a second drive failure destroys the array. On the H965i with its hardware XOR engine and PCIe 5.0 bandwidth, RAID 6 rebuilds are not meaningfully slower than RAID 5 rebuilds — the bottleneck is the drive, not the controller. There is no performance reason to choose RAID 5 over RAID 6 at current drive capacities.
Mistake #5: Not checking OS and hypervisor driver support before purchase. The H965i is supported in-box on VMware ESXi 7.0 U3+, Esxi 8.0+, Windows Server 2019/2022/2025, RHEL 8.6+/9.x, SLES 15 SP4+, and Ubuntu 20.04/22.04/24.04 LTS. No driver disk required at install time for any of these — the inbox driver detects and configures the controller automatically.

Who Should Not Buy the H965i
If you are running a software-defined storage stack (Ceph, vSAN ESA, MinIO) that manages redundancy at the software layer, you do not need a hardware RAID controller. Configure the onboard SATA/SAS ports in AHCI/passthrough mode or use a simple HBA. The H965i is for environments where hardware RAID is the supported configuration — VMware vSphere with local storage, Windows Server with Storage Spaces disabled, and traditional 3-tier architectures with dedicated storage servers.
If your server has fewer than 8 alloggiamenti per unità, the H965i’s 16-port count is overkill. The PERC H355 (8-porta, entry-level) or onboard SATA/SAS controller may be more cost-effective.
