Single-Socket vs Dual-Socket Servers: A Licensing TCO Calculator for VMware, Windows 서버, and Oracle

The numbers are brutal: a 160-core single-socket EPYC server costs half the VMware licensing of a 64-core dual-socket server that delivers 60% fewer cores. Oracle licensing amplifies this effect to an eye-watering degreethe per-core Oracle license on a 160-core single-socket platform costs $3.8 million, but the per-core Oracle license on a 288-core dual-socket platform costs $6.84 million. When Single-Socket Makes SenseAnd When It Does Not

Clear Wins for Single-Socket

  • Any workload licensed per-socket: VMware vSphere, Windows Server Standard (licensed per physical core but the socket multiplier matters for Datacenter), SQL Server Standard (licensed per core or Server+CAL, but the core model favors fewer sockets), and any ISV application with per-socket pricing.
  • Horizontally scaled, stateless workloads: Kubernetes workers, web servers, API gateways, microservices. These scale by adding nodes, not by adding sockets to nodes. A fleet of 10x R470 single-socket nodes costs half the VMware licensing of 5x R770 dual-socket nodes while delivering more aggregate compute.
  • HCI deployments: vSAN, Nutanix, and Azure Stack HCI where the licensing cost often exceeds the hardware cost over the deployment lifecycle. Single-socket HCI nodes with 160-core EPYC processors are the most licensing-efficient HCI building block available.

Where Dual-Socket Still Wins

1. Is this workload licensed per-socket or per-core? If per-socket, single-socket platforms are almost always the correct answer. If per-core and your workload is thread-parallel (not single-thread-bound), single-socket with high core counts still wins because you pay only for the cores you use.

2. What is the memory-to-core ratio of your current workload? Measure peak memory utilization and peak CPU utilization over 30 날. If your workloads consistently max out memory before CPU, you may need the 32-DIMM dual-socket platform regardless of licensing savings.
