The 24TB NAS Drive That Makes a 4-Bay Synology a 72TB File Server
A 4-bay NAS with four 24TB drives in SHR (Synology Hybrid RAID) delivers 72 TB of usable capacity with one-drive fault tolerance. For a small business that has outgrown its 12TB NAS, that is a 6x capacity jump without changing the enclosure. The WD Red Pro 24TB is the highest-capacity drive in WD’s NAS lineup, combining 7,200 RPM CMR recording, 2.5 million hours MTBF, 300 TB/year workload rating, and AgileArray firmware optimized for multi-drive RAID environments. It is the drive you put in the NAS that now stores everything because the old NAS was too small.

NAS Capacity Planning: What 24TB Drives Unlock
| NAS Size | Disques | RAID Level | Usable Capacity (24TB drives) | Use Case |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 4-bay (Synologie DS923+) | 4x 24TB | SHR (RAID 5) | 72 TB | SMB file server, video archive, backup target |
| 6-bay | 6x 24TB | SHR-2 (RAID 6) | 96 TB | Department file server, surveillance archive |
| 8-bay | 8x 24TB | SHR-2 (RAID 6) | 144 TB | Mid-size enterprise, Veeam repository |
| 12-bay | 12x 24TB | SHR-2 (RAID 6) | 240 TB | Enterprise backup, media archive |
Why 24TB — And the RAID 6 Question
At 24TB per drive, RAID rebuild time becomes a serious consideration. A single 24TB drive failure in a RAID 5 array triggers a 30+ hour rebuild. WD Red Pro includes TLER (Time-Limited Error Recovery), which caps drive-level error recovery at 7 seconds so the RAID controller can make the recovery decision instead of the drive hanging indefinitely. For arrays of 24TB drives, RAID 6/SHR-2 (dual parity) is strongly recommended — the probability of a second failure during a 30-hour rebuild is not negligible, and dual parity covers it. The 24TB Red Pro makes sense when you need capacity density per bay; for smaller deployments where rebuild time matters more than capacity, 8-16TB drives remain viable.
Compatible NAS Platforms
Compatible with Synology (DS923+, DS1522+, RS1221+, and higher), QNAP, Asustor, TerraMaster NAS with 3.5-inch SATA bays. Also compatible with TrueNAS, Unraid, Proxmox. SHR-2 recommended for 4+ drive arrays with 24TB drives.
