PowerEdge R770 Review | Dell’s Most Modular Xeon 6 Serveur

The 2U Xeon 6 Server That Changed Dell’s Design Language

Every few generations, a server platform shows up that is less an iteration and more a re-think. The PowerEdge R770 is that platform for Dell in 2026. StorageReview called itmodular, powerful and AI-ready”; ServeTheHome described it asa fluid new 2Udesign. Both picked up on the same thing: the R770 abandons the fixed front-panel template of previous PowerEdge racks in favor of a modular, serviceable chassis built around OCP DC-MHSand it is the first mainstream Dell 2U to make front- or rear-I/O an order-time choice rather than a product-line split.

A Look at the Chassis

The R770’s defining move is the front-I/O option: with rear-I/O servers, 90% of rack maintenance happens in the hot aisle; the front-I/O R770 puts ports, iDRAC and a DB9 serial console on the cold aisle, so drive swaps and diagnostics happen without entering the hot aisle at all. The chassis is DC-MHS (Open Compute) influenced – alimentations, fan modules and the BOSS-N1 boot module are tool-less, hot-swappable units, and the drive cage supports up to 40 x E3.S Gen5 drives in the 2U envelope. That is themodularthat reviewers kept coming back to: components Dell used to bolt down are now field-serviceable units.

Platform Analysis: Where the Specs Get Interesting

Processeur. Two Xeon 6 sockets with a 144 E-core / 86 P-core split is unusual for a 2U mainstream boxthe E-core side is a cloud-native density play, the P-core side covers single-thread-heavy database work, and the same chassis serves both. Dell quotes up to 1.69x performance-per-watt over the prior generation.

Mémoire. 32 DDR5 slots at 6400 MT/s (Le Xeon 6 speed grade) avec un 8 TB ceilingfor in-memory database and AI inference buffers.

Stockage. The headline number is 40 x E3.S Gen5 drives (2457.6 TB) – the highest-density NVMe layout Dell has shipped in 2U, aimed squarely at AI data pipelines and all-flash SDS. The BOSS-N1 DC-MHS boot module keeps OS boot off the data bays.

Réseautage. Two OCP 3.0 slots accept 1GbE-400GbE cards, and the BlueField-3 DPU options (2x200GbE or 1x400GbE) offload networking/storage/security from the Xeon 6 noyaux – the AI-ready angle StorageReview highlighted.

GPU. 2 X 450 W double-wide slots cover NVIDIA L40S-class inference accelerators inside the 2U, without the 4U/6U jump.

Management and Software

The R770 runs the 10th-generation iDRAC controller with Redfish RESTful API, CLI RACADM, HTML5 virtual console and virtual media; Openmanage Enterprise (with Power Manager, Services and Update plugins) integrates with VMware vCenter, Microsoft System Center, Ansible and Terraform, and NativeEdge Orchestrator targets edge deployments. System Lockdown freezes firmware configuration in productionthe cyber-resilient story that carries across the Xeon 6 PowerEdge family.

Performance Outlook

Avec 6400 MT/s DDR5, 40-drive E3.S Gen5 storage and 2 X 450 W GPU, the R770 is positioned for AI inference, cloud-native and distributed-database workloadsand the front-I/O variant changes the maintenance economics of dense racks. Real-world power figures will land with reviewersfull test suites; what the design review already shows is that Dell has removed the usual 2U compromises (fixed I/O, bolted-down modules, storage ceiling) that previous generations accepted.

Final Thoughts

Who should look at the R770: anyone refreshing 2U racks for AI inference, cloud-native density or distributed databases, and any operator tired of hot-aisle maintenance. Who should wait: estates standardized on rear-I/O racks with no near-term GPU or 40-drive NVMe plansthe R670 remains the lighter 1U alternative.

We carry the R770 in front- and rear-I/O configurations with E3.S Gen5 storage, L40S GPU options and BlueField-3 DPUs – voir le R670 (1tu) et R960 (4U 4-socket) for the platform’s bookends.
