The SSD You Buy When You Need 3 DWPD Endurance But Cannot Justify the OEM Tax on Samsung or Micron
Enterprise SSD pricing follows a predictable pattern: Samsung and Micron command a 20-30 percent premium for the brand. Kingston delivers the same endurance tier, same form factor, and same NAND generation at a price point that reflects the savings of not maintaining a captive NAND fab. The DC1500M 7.68TB is a U.2 PCIe 3.0 x4 NVMe SSD rated at 3 DWPD — three full drive writes per day, every day, for five years. That is 42,048 TBW of endurance on a 7.68TB drive. For OLTP logging, write caching, and database tempdb volumes that burn through 1 DWPD drives in 18 months, the DC1500M is the drive that outlasts the server.

3 DWPD vs 1 DWPD — The Endurance Gap That Matters
| Workload | Typical DWPD | 1 DWPD Drive (5-year expected life) | 3 DWPD Drive (5-year expected life) |
|---|---|---|---|
| VMware boot volume (OS only, read-mostly) | ~0.05-0.1 | 50+ years (effectively forever) | Massively overprovisioned. Buy 1 DWPD. |
| General-purpose database data volume | ~0.3-0.5 | 10-16 years. 1 DWPD is fine. | Overkill. Save the budget for 1 DWPD. |
| OLTP write-ahead log (WAL) / transaction log | ~1.5-2.5 | 2-3 years. Drive will wear out within warranty period. | 8-16 years. 3 DWPD is correct. |
| Write cache tier (ZFS SLOG, Ceph WAL/DB) | ~2-5 | 1-2.5 years. Drive will wear out well before warranty expires. | 3-7 years. 3 DWPD recommended, monitor actual wear. |
| Database tempdb (SQL Server tempdb, Oracle TEMP) | ~3-10 | 6 months to 1.5 years. Do not deploy 1 DWPD here. | 1.5-5 years. Acceptable with monitoring. Monitor TBW monthly. |
PCIe 3.0 x4 — Still Enough for 3 DWPD Workloads in 2026
The DC1500M uses PCIe 3.0 x4, not Gen4 or Gen5. At 3,200 MB/s sequential and 540K random read IOPS, the interface is not the bottleneck for the workloads this drive targets. OLTP transaction logs, ZFS SLOG devices, and write caches are latency-sensitive, not throughput-sensitive — and the DC1500M’s 85 microsecond read latency is competitive with Gen4 drives. The price savings from the PCIe 3.0 controller generation are passed through to the drive cost. If your workload is IOPS-bound at QD1 (low queue depth, latency-sensitive), PCIe 3.0 x4 is not the bottleneck. If your workload is throughput-bound at QD256 (high queue depth, bandwidth-sensitive), consider a Gen4 drive instead.
